It’s always good to see the evolution of home-grown products and this year’s Metro FM Music Awards, held at the ICC in Durban, were all about evolution.
2016 saw the addition of one new category to celebrate the work of artists from the rest of the continent as well as the introduction of a cash prize for each of this year’s winners.
Winners were allocated R100,000 each while the song of the year winner could expect R130,000 amounting to about R2 Miliion
Metro FM DJ’s Mo Flava and Bonang Matheba were the evening’s hosts and though they did a fantastic presenting job, their chemistry didn’t feel natural. It was almost as if they had never spent any time in the same room before last week.
The awards show was the talk of the virtual town on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook under the official #MMA15 hashtag and here are the moments that got people talking:
- Newcomer, Emtee, takes home R400K
The novice artist surprised everyone by scooping up four awards on Saturday night. We all obviously did the maths and that means he earned R400K in under 2 hours. His label mate, Fifi Cooper took home two awards and R200K.
- Ambitious Entertainment takes home six awards in its first year
Seeing as Fifi and Emtee belong to the same stable, it means the label – co-owned by Emtee – took home an impressive six MMA’s in its first year.
- Somizi confirms fallout with Bonang
Somgaga presented the first award of the night, Best Remix, and decided to kick things off with a spicy remix of his own.
Singing his own rendition of one of Bonang’s favourite songs – Nomvula by Nathi – Somizi asked the crowd to bring his Nomvula back because they were no longer speaking after arguing about Supa Mega.
Ever since the release of Nathi’s hit song, Matheba has taken to calling herself Nomvula and it is well known that AKA’s other nickname is Supa Mega.
Hmmm, now we wait and see if they will make up…
- Pearl Thusi’s wig
There was a lovely little moment where Bonang had to introduce Pearl Thusi (who had to present an award) and Thusi graciously accepted the introduction. Though everyone was disappointed by the lack of spice in that exchange, they were even more disappointed by Thusi’s wig.
That wig neh… I’ll reserve my comments and let these Tweets say it all.
- Bonang’s outfits
All eyes were naturally on Matheba and what she would be wearing, especially since she had Zendaya’s stylist Law “Luxury Law” Roach, flown in to style her for the event.
B* looked stunning in all six outfits – some of them just didn’t feel right for the Metro’s though… Like that powder blue pantsuit with the peplum bodice – that would have worked for a fundraiser or a luncheon with public officials and their wives.
