Pearl Thusi and D’Banj to host MTV’s Lip Sync Battle Africa

Pearl Thusi and D’Banj have been announced as the hosts of the local version of MTV and Spike’s Lip Sync Battle.

The announcement comes right on the back of the news that Thusi is leaving Live AMP. While the 500 people who still watch Live AMP might be sad to see her go, the rest of us are excited to see her move on to bigger and better things.

The format of the show will remain the same with a few tweaks here and there, so, you can expect to hear your favourite international jams alongside African classics. The first season will comprise of 13 half-hour episodes.

The popular show, originally created by Spike, features celebrities going head to head, lip-syncing two songs of their choice, battling for the coolest bragging rights on the planet. MTV provides each contestant with a choreographer, dancers, costumes and props.

Celebs will not be the only people invited to be part of the show, you can also expect to see a few politicians pretend to belt out their favourite songs. I don’t know about you guys but I might riot if Fikile “Fleekile” “Razzmatazz” Mbalula does not appear on the first season of LSB Africa.

Thusi said her mind was racing backstage prior to the announcement and it has only just hit her that this is happening. Those nerves were not apparent as she walked out to Emtee’s “Pearl Thusi” blaring over the speakers, looking stunning in a two-piece MaXhosa ensemble.

D’Banj on the other hand said he took the job because he is naturally an entertainer and has never done anything like this before. He will serve as the show’s colour commentator and will be posting updates to Snapchat during the show.

Tweeps don’t seem too happy about Thusi’s appointment though. What is it with Tweeps and Thusi? Hopefully she does a stellar job on the show and they can finally leave her alone.

MTV said what they were looking for in hosts were “people who would bring energy, personality, knowledge of music and performance,” and Mama Pantha and the Kokomaster can definitely deliver on that front.

Lip Sync Battle Africa will air on MTV (DSTV channel 130) every Thursday at 20h50pm, MTV Base (DSTV channel 322) at 11h00 and later on eTv (DSTV channel 194) at 18h00 from Saturday, 23 April onward. Filming of the show starts tonight.

Fans who participated in the online #LSBChallenge may be invited to be part of the stuio audience.
