The South African Music Awards (SAMAs) have found a new home and it is no surprise that they – like many other events – will be held in Durban at an estimated cost of R46 Million.
As opposed to taking place in April like they usually do, the 22nd annual SAMAs will be happening on 4 June at The Durban International Convention Centre.

The awards show will no longer be held at the Sun City Superbowl in the North West due to Sun International’s multi-million rand refurbishment of Sun City (including the Superbowl). It is for this same reason that this year’s Miss South Africa pageant was held at Carnival City.
SAMAs chairperson Refiloe Ramogase attributes the first destination choice for this year’s SAMA’s to the weather and that fact that it “lends itself to people having a great time at a destination event.”
Speaking on SABC 2’s Morning Live, Ramogase also stated that the event might be held in different cities every year in future. I for one really hope that multi-city move happens, Durbanties must be getting sick of Joburgers descending on their shores every few months to party and leave debauchery in their wake.
The awards show, known for its long history of promoting local music and acknowledging the contribution made by artists, will announce this year’s nominees in mid-April. What they haven’t yet announced is who will be hosting the entire thing. Best believe I’ll be watching to see who gets the gig.
