The morning began with a select group of entertainment reporters and bloggers meeting at Park Station in Johannesburg only to be whisked away to a secret location via train.
It wasn’t long before they found themselves at Soweto Theatre in Jabulani, Soweto, to witness the future of the South African Music Awards.
Nomuzi “Moozlie” Mabena was the host for the day’s festivities, she kicked things off before SAMA Chairperson, Refiloe Ramogase, took to the stage to explain the #TheFutureIsHear theme. He then introduced Phillip Sithole of Durban Tourism for the mandatory government speech that very few people actually ever listen to at such events.
The Morris Isaacson High School choir performed their own rendition of Zahara’s hit Loliwe and were followed by a performance from Grammy winning artist, Wouter Kellerman.
The nominees were simultaneously announced both at the event and via the official SAMA’s YouTube Channel.
2016 really seems to be Ambitiouz Entertainment’s year as Fifi Cooper and Emtee are nominated in quite a few categories as they were at the Metro FM Music Awards. Other nominees include Kid X, AKA, Da Les, Black Coffee, Karlien van Jaarsveld and Tresor Riziki. Cassper Nyovest’s ‘Refiloe’ didn’t make the cut for the Best Rap Album category. Hmmm…
You can view all the SAMA 2016 nominees in the slideshow below:

If you paid careful attention you will notice that one category is missing… That is because the Amstel Record of the Year nominees will be announced tomorrow evening, Friday 22 April, on SABC’s Live Amp at 7:30pm before voting lines open.
Tickets for the 22nd Annual SAMAs go on sale at Computicket tomorrow and they will be held at the ICC in Durban.
