Thursday night saw the first episode of the highly anticipated local version of MTV’s “Lip Sync Battle.”
“Lip Sync Battle Africa” kicked off after weeks of promotion and days of teasers about the battle of the exes between rapper Caspper Nyovest and media personality and model Boity Thulo.
The show’s host, Pearl Thusi, held it down and I feel as though she’ll only get better as the weeks go by and she’s settled in to the role and come to terms with the idea of being the host of such a major show.
What I didn’t enjoy was the colour commentator, D’Banj. Although his reaction to Boity’s second performance was priceless, he just doesn’t do the role justice.
Anyway, let’s recap…
Boity kicked off the show by rapping to Nasty C’s Juice Back and followed it up with a jaw-dropping performance of Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda. That rather famous behind of hers (that we first got a full view of in her photoshoot for the Marie Claire Naked issue) instantly got Boity trending and ultimately won her the title of Africa’s first Lip Sync Battle champion.
Caspper started off by performing Arthur Mafokate’s Sika le’khekhe and followed it up with a surprise performance of Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance with Somebody, complete with a wig and full face beat.
Viewers criticized the two for not lip-syncing enough and expressed the fact that they would like to see more lip-syncing in future.
Despite the unnatural flow of things (especially the mandatory trash talk between Boity and Cass), the first show was a hit and I don’t know about you guys but I’ll definitely be watching every week.
If you missed the first episode, you can catch the repeat on MTV Base (DSTV channel 322) this Saturday, 16 April at 11am.
MTV also announced that Thando Thabethe will go head to head with Lerato Kganyago on next week’s episode in a battle of the DJ’s. 5FM vs. METRO FM. Tune in to MTV (DSTV channel 130) next Thursday at 20:50 to see it all go down.
