In another win for South African cinema, director Adze Ugah’s rom com ‘Mrs. Right Guy’ managed to pass the R1 Million mark on the Monday following its nationwide release on Friday 3 June.
The movie held its own against blockbusters like ‘X Men – Apocalypse’, ‘Angry Birds’ and ‘Alice: Through The Looking Glass,’ securing fifth place on the industry Top Ten this past weekend just behind ‘Money Monster’.
According to a statement, ‘Mrs. Right Guy’ doubled the gross takings of audience favourite ‘Fanie Fourie’s Lobola’ (2012) and performed 19% better than last year’s ‘Tell Me Sweet Something’.
The film (produced by Dumi Gumbi, Kethiwe Ngcobo, Mokopi Shale and Cati Weinek) depicts the challenges facing the contemporary single woman in her search for a mate and reflects the complications millennials face as they try to find true love.
Raising laughs as well as hope for those who have been wounded by love, the film follows Gugu (played by Dineo Moeketsi) as fate introduces her to two eligible young men – serial seducer Dumile (Thapelo Mokoena) and regular good guy Joe (Lehasa Moloi).
