Lizha James Thrilled To Be Nominated for #MTVMAMAS16

The hype from Wednesday night’s #MTVMAMAS16 nomination party is just beginning to die down, and I say “good riddance!” because some of us are struggling to recover from the party (don’t judge me). Who wouldn’t party hard at an event where some of Africa’s biggest stars came out to play?

The hosts for the night were actress and all around firecracker, Nomzamo Mbatha who brought the flair, alongside MTV Base VJ, Sandile GQ who brought the energy.

Once all the introductions were done and dusted, it was time for the real action. The highly anticipated nominees were revealed (you can check the full list below) and although some of Africa’s biggest acts were recognised on the night, there were some definitely noticeable absentees.

I couldn’t let the night pass without speaking to at least one of our African guests and luckily, I bumped into the lovely, Lizha James from Mozambique. Lizha was nominated in the best Lusophone category and she couldn’t have been more thrilled about this.

“The great thing is that I get the opportunity to represent every Lusophone in Africa, I am honoured. I hope I do well and that people vote! I’m happy to be making my country proud too” said Lizha.

I asked how she would feel if she managed to win her category and she responded:

“I would feel amazing but I have to represent every artist out there. I want to take them with me. It’s not that I’m the best, it just means right now I’m the one who gets to represent. I’m such a big fan of everybody nominated, it’s a really strong category this year!”

Seeing as I once heard Lizha James described as the ‘Beyonce of Mozambique,’ I took the opportunity to ask her about this while I still had her attention. Apparently she’s not even aware of this title!

“Wow! That’s such a big responsibility, that’s a huge title!”

We’ll get to find out who’s joining Lizha on the nominee list when the second round of nominations, comprising 7 additional award categories, including Artist of the Year, Best Female, Listener’s Choice, Best Breakthrough, Best Francophone, Song of the Year in partnership with Google, and Video of the Year, are revealed at the Hard Rock Café, Lagos, Nigeria during Road to MAMA on 2 October 2016.

No nominations will be revealed for the MTV Base Reimagined award, and MAMA Legend however.

Voting for MAMA 2016 opens at 23:00 tonight (Wednesday, 21 September) over at and affiliated Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Additionally, fans can vote for Best Group and Best International Act from 21 September by simply searching for “MTV MAMA” on Google, with each Google account allowed 5 votes per category per day. Google voting for Best Breakthrough and Song of the Year will open on 2 October.

Voting in all categories closes at 23.59 CAT on 19 October 2016.
