#MediaGirlReviews the #MTVMAMAs16

The build up to the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards was one of the most FOMO-inducing things that happened this year, that was until the night’s original host (Trevor Noah) pulled out at the last minute – citing a respiratory infection as the cause.

The nation was collectively touched at the news that one of the country’s golden boys would no longer be able to come home and host one of the continent’s biggest awards ceremonies as planned.

And it can only go one of two ways when you piss South Africans off… They either get extremely vocal about their feelings or they let you feel the wrath of a deafening silence and Saturday was a mix of both.

Probably as a result of Noah’s absence, The Ticketpro Dome wasn’t as packed as I expected it to be. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise because that gave us more room to party.

Tall a$$ Mo served as the evening’s hype man (for lack of a better word), keeping the crowd buzzing during ad breaks with help from DJ pH.

The evening’s host, Bonang Matheba did her job, not that there was any doubt that she could. But, it’s Bonang, we know what she can do, and considering the fact she hosted the Metro FM music awards this year… This was honestly nothing new.

Nomzamo Mbatha also held it down alongside B and Yemi Alade, and I preferred her outfits to those worn by Bonang. Nomzamo managed to give off more of a MAMAs vibe whereas B* gave us “E! Live from the Red Carpet” yet again.

As for King Yemi, I prefer her singing to her presenting. Not only can she hold a note, the woman performs her ass off but I don’t think presenting is her forte.

While I’m glad Africa finally gets to put out so much of our own music that it’s enough to fill up an entire awards show, I was disappointed by how short some of the performances were. I feel as though it would have been more of party of artists like WizKid, Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C and YCee got to perform more than one song each. It also would have been great if we got cool new mash-up mixes from one-off collaborations, like Nasty C and YCee or Cassper Nyovest and Yemi Alade.

In addition to new mixes, MTV awards ceremonies are notorious for featuring moments that get people talking and this awards show was no different.

Not only did Cassper debut a pony-tail-less head, he also took the chance to show of his new ‘Fill Up Orlando Stadium’ body by lending his celebrity to a cause and ‘saying it with his chest’ by painting #FeesMustFall across his torso and taking his hoodie off at the end of his performance to show the message on live TV.

And then there was the poor kid who got so caught up in the Future hype that he hopped up on stage during the rapper’s performance and hugged the star who hugged him back. The kid was unfortunately beat up by security after it went down – all because he showed love to his fave. Shem.

There seems to have been more hype around the event and it’s attendees or lack thereof that some people seem to have forgotten that it was an awards show. Among the night’s winners are Yemi Alade, Cassper Nyovest and Hugh Masekele.
